Citrix Online, a division of Citrix Systems, markets a number of products for webinars and online meetings, including GoToMeeting and GoToWebinar. Businesses looking to conduct webinars or online meetings, when comparing the two, should consider some of the functional differences between them. Why would you want webinar software, or why should you prefer an online conferencing service?
GoToMeeting contains more features to allow interactive participation in the meeting, via video conferencing, document and desktop sharing, whereas GoToWebinar is focused more on one-way presentations from the meeting controller to his/her audience, and has participation features limited to audio only with no video conferencing. Likewise, desktop and document sharing is absent from GoToWebinar.
When considering the size of your meeting, note that GoToMeeting will support only 26 participants in total. If you have more than this, you will have to use GoToWebinar, which will support up to 1000 in standard form, with scalable options for smaller numbers or, with GoToWebinar Premier Event, extension beyond 1000.
GoToWebinar will provide analysis of attendees, results of polls taken during the session and other reporting and recording features. The controller of the session can take group opinions very easily, and participants can give quick Yes/No-style responses to polls and surveys generated by the controller. Whilst GoToMeeting doesn’t offer the poll and survey functionality, and will only give limited reporting on attendees, it does have more interactivity between attendees in terms of remote control of the attendees’ computers, chat between participants and sharing of documents.
There are differences in the scheduling and registration processes for each; GoToMeeting supports an instant meeting feature, where attendees enter a meeting number, or click a link, to attend. GoToWebinar requires advance scheduling, with attendees required to register their attendance with their name, email address and possibly other customizable information to be gathered in advance of the meeting for the controller’s benefit.
It Depends On Your Audience
When considering target attendees and audiences, GoToWebinar is perhaps better suited to meetings with external clients and sales prospects, allowing a wide-scale broadcast message to reach a large external group. GoToMeeting, with its advanced sharing options, is maybe better suited to internal meetings with more interactivity between the attendees. Both products, however, offer recording and playback features allowing later analysis or possible re-use of content in later meetings and presentations.
